Shepherd’s Pie with Beans

I am going to take a crack at writing a recipe on a new gadget I found here at WordPress. I am starting with Shepherd’s Pie because we ate it the other night and it was delicious!

Let’s see how this goes. I am excited! 🙂

Shepherd’s Pie with Beans

Serving Size: 6

Shepherd’s Pie with Beans

  • 2 cans green beans or 4 cups steamed
  • 1 quart tomato soup
  • 6 cups plain mashed potatoes
  • 2 cups beans
  • 1 onion
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • optional: 1 lb. ground beef

  1. If you are not using canned beans, start them soaking the day before you cook this meal.
  2. After they are soaked overnight, cover them with 3 inches of water in your pressure cooker and manually set it to 30 minutes.
  3. If you don't have a pressure cooker, put them in the crockpot on low covered with water for 6 hours or until tender.
  4. If your green beans are fresh, steam them until tender.
  5. Boil enough potatoes to make 6 cups when they are mashed.
  6. Mash the potatoes when they are done boiling.
  7. If you are using canned tomato soup, open the cans.
  8. If you are making your tomato soup, blend your garden fresh tomatoes into soup.
  9. Saute the onion until soft.
  10. If you are using the optional hamburger, brown it.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
  12. In a 9x13 casserole dish layer the drained beans, the steamed green beans, the sauteed onion, the tomato soup and the salt and pepper.
  13. Add the optional beef.
  14. Cover everything with the potatoes.
  15. Put the pan in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  16. Voila! Bon Apetite!

Allright. I got it posted. Now you’ve got to tell me how I did. Does it make sense? Is it too wordy? Are there too many options?

Tell me in the comments below, please!

  1. What if I dont use tomatoes will it taste the same.
Elisha yes you have done many wording but that is good for one to properly and easily understand the process of hox you make the shepherds pie with beans.
What else can you serve with it?
My kids love pie, I want to try your method and I think and hope it comes out nicely like yours.
    Nice review.

    1. Hmmmm. I have been eating Shepherd’s Pie my whole life and have never had it without tomatoes! I understand that some people are allergic, can’t have them for digestive or yeast issues, or just plain don’t like them.

You could make it without the tomatoes. It would not taste the same, but hey, maybe it would be better….

I would find some other kind of sauce that goes well with potatoes and beans. I’m picturing some kind of gravy. Yes, I think it would be yummy.

To serve with it, we always have a salad with our main dishes. Chop up some romaine and spinach and top it with a favorite dressing. Salad goes with everything like you can wear denim with everything 🙂
